Best Gyms in Jacksonville

Best Gyms in Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville, Florida is an exciting city loaded with fun activities to keep you entertained whether you live here or are just visiting. The beach bar scene at Jax Beach is one of the better bar scenes you can find (I could easily write another blog on my adventures to Surfer, Hoptinger and the other awesome beach bars). But, this isn’t about bars, this is about how to make sure you have a place to burn off the calories from those beach bar nights.

Jacksonville, area wise, is the largest city in the US. Luckily, I drive like Ricky Bobby and was able to cover a ton of ground over my week-long trip. Like I said before, Jacksonville is a really cool city, if you are lucky enough to travel or live here you have to take advantage of all the outdoor activities available.

Best Health Club in Jacksonville: Bailey’s Health & Fitness – San Jose

Bailey’s is a top-caliber health club chain. They only have about 20 locations, mostly in Jacksonville, but all in Florida. On my trip, I was able to visit all of their higher end locations. The San Jose location jumped out at me due to both the quality of equipment and the cleanliness of the entire facility.

I showed up at 11:30 AM and the place was a ghost town. If you ever have the chance, the middle of the day is always pretty slow and makes for a great time to get in a lift.  The facility is spotless and has ample equipment for nearly any type of workout. They even have a large functional training section for all you real go-getters.

The San Jose location also has a really nice sauna and steam room. Although I’m usually a glutton for spa type amenities, I decided to just take a peak and not fully indulge. Both were roomy and also very clean. This location also has a basketball court, it’s a little tight, but still a decent court. The front desk said they usually have pretty good games on weekday evenings.

Best Mid-Size Fitness Club in JacksonvilleBailey’s Health & Fitness – Monument

Weight Room floor, courtesy of https://baileysgym.com.

I hate writing about the same gym chain in a post and actually try to avoid it, but you have to give credit where it’s due. The Monument location is a little smaller than the San Jose location but is still a fantastic club.

Trophy’s atmosphere has a heavy emphasis on fitness. They have a wide variety of top-notch equipment and even have equipment suitable for functional style workouts. After my workout, I made use of both their sauna and steam room – I know, I’m a sucker for spa-style amenities.

The staff at Trophy was very warm and the overall atmosphere was very inviting. While the weight room is geared for individuals who are there to sweat, the facility was extremely clean and was very spacious for a downtown location.

Front Desk’s Best Class Pick:

Featured Amenities: extensive free weights, sauna, steam room, spin studio, studio classes

Cleanliness: 10/10

Amenities: 8/10

Best Big-Box Gym in Jacksonville: LA Fitness – Jacksonville Lakewood

Studio floor, courtesy of LA Fitness – Lakewood.

There’s no doubt, I like LA Fitnesses. You always know what you’re going to get and they always have great pickup basketball games. I visited the Lakewood location around 7 PM on a Wednesday. I called ahead and heard that was the best time to come in to play pickup. There was a great group of guys playing and I was able to get a great sweat in.

The club was a little crowded, which I believe is due to the great value members get. This location has a full basketball court, pool, and sauna. Although I didn’t lift, from what I saw, they had a great free weight selection and quality equipment.

As I stated before, with LA Fitness, you know what you’re getting, a well run, clean, quality facility at a great value. They are typically a little more crowded than other comparable fitness clubs, but for the price, you get a great deal. I really enjoyed my time at LA Fitness and had a great time playing basketball.

Front Desk’s Best Class Pick: Bryant’s Pick – Cycle

Featured Amenities: basketball, sauna, cycle studio, pool

Monthly membership dues: $24.99 with $29.99 initiation

Cleanliness: 9/10

Best Bargain Gym in Jacksonville: Youfit – Norwood Ave.

Cardio machines, courtesy of Yelp.com

I have been to a few Youfits in the past. The Norwood Ave. location is a fairly typical shopping center gym. I liked this specific location because of its convenience and overall cleanliness. It is a little smaller than other Youfits I’ve visited, but overall a great location.

For a bargain gym chain, these clubs are pretty nice. Similar in concept to a Planet Fitness, these gyms have all the essentials for a good workout. You don’t get the extra amenities of a larger health club, but it’s tough to beat the $10 a month price tag.

Youfits, in general, can be somewhat crowded. Like I said above, their price is hard to beat so they typically have pretty large membership enrollment numbers. Luckily, this location has ample equipment and even with a large number of people working out, it didn’t seem overcrowded.

Front Desk’s Best Class Pick:

Featured Amenities: extensive free weights, machines, large cardio area

Monthly membership dues: $10 – $22

Day pass rate: $10

Cleanliness: 8/10

Amenities: 9/10

Overall: 9/10

Best Studio in Jacksonville: The Verb Jax

Main room, courtesy of The Verb Jax.

The Verb Jax is located in Riverside, one of my favorite parts of Jacksonville. Located on the St. Johns River, they are able to hold awesome outdoor classes with gorgeous views of the downtown skyline and river.

This club does not have all the bells and whistles of a spa-like health club and is definitely geared toward the more serious fitness goer. With that being said, The Verb is about as good as it gets in this category. Their staff is made up of extremely knowledgeable personal trainers, their classes are great, and the setting is awesome.

The verb Jax also has top-of-the-line equipment and the facility is immaculate. From my experience, working out in a spotless facility can provide extra motivation to stick to your workout goals. Overall, this place is a hidden gym (see what I did there? 😉).

Front Desk’s Best Class Pick:

Featured Amenities: functional training, certified personal trainers, classes

Monthly membership dues: $50

Day pass rate: $15

Cleanliness: 10/10

Amenities: 5/10

Overall: 9/10

Honorable mentions: Gold’s Gym, Life Time Athletic Clubs, Planet Fitness, Retro Fitness
